Taxco Churches
Ex Convento, Catholic, Calle Benito Juárez

This church is our personal favorite. The building is exquisite as you can see in the photos below. The changes that have occurred over the centuries have not for the most part been additive, but still she retains the glory of the architect that designed her so many hundreds of years ago. The day we visited with camera in hand, the front doors were locked so we have no interior photographs, but in this case, the building stands on its own. Take a look and see if you don't agree.

For several years we lived in an apartment designed and built by Taxco's famed artist, Jaime Oates. What started out as constructing a painting studio over what was a beautiful home went on to constructing beautiful spaces for uses by the artist as places to dream. The apartment was huge. What was our bedroom had been his painting studio with north light windows lining the entire wall. There was a fireplace and furniture made by Hector Aguilar. What became our living room and my writing space, was a perfectly square room with two walls of windows on sliding tracks. Outside was an eight foot terrace that overlooked Ex Convento.

Each year in August, there is a celebration of God's birthday at Ex Convento. When we were residents in Oate's apartment, we always looked forward to this event. At 7:00 A.M. a band arrived. They came on their own bus with all of their acoustic instruments and in a short while they began to play. And, play they did until midnight!! These were musicians of the first caliber -- they made great music and they did it all day!! The celebration usually includes one of the best castillos of the year followed by far too many torritos.
