RELIGION
Taxqueñans
are a religious people as can be seen in the number of churches and
small shrines around the town. Church bells ring at all hours of the
day and night, marking not only the time, but the hours of religious
services and even knelling news of a death in the neighborhood. Many
people maintain a private shrine in their home or garden which are almost
always lovingly adorned with fresh cut flowers.
Once outlawed by the Mexican Government in an effort
to reduce the power of the Catholic Church, religious processions now
take place routinely in the streets around town. At times processions
of believers make their way from some of the local villages to town
oftentimes carrying a religious icon which will be placed for a while
in one of the Taxco churches before returning to its home village in
yet another procession.
Taxco is best known for its Easter Week processions
of penitents. There is much secrecy surrounding the individuals who
participate, but many are said to be seeking relief from an illness
or living a pledge made on behalf of a family member. It is not something
for the weak of heart for the blood is as real as the pain of the participants.
The accompanying drummers beat a solemn dirge which may chill many a
soft heart. Nevertheless, Taxco is always completely filled during Easter
Week with visiting spectators of this medieval expression of religious
fervor.
A more light hearted and wonderful day in Taxco may
be spent visiting all of the many churches and small shrines in town.
Each has its own character and many differ in the architectural style
in which they were built, reflecting the growth of the town and evolving
forms of faith over
the centuries. Each of the Catholic churches
in its unique statuary also seems to reflect a particular vision of
Catholicism. The churches are all fascinating to visit and many are
truly beautiful buildings.
What follow are links to pictorials of the churches
we have visited and to some of the small shrines we have seen along
the way when we have been traveling in Taxco.

a hamburger with fries for lunch and a pork chop for dinner. What ever
you order, you won’t be disappointed. Aside from offering good
food, Restaurante Ethel has a great location right in the center of
town. Normally pozole is served in Taxco's restaurants only on Thursday,

Our Comment: We live just up from this little eatery
which is one of the few remaining such places near the center of town.
Most have been converted to silver shops so this is a real find for
the visitor. The aromas never cease to make us skip a step as we walk
home. Now and again we stop in and we’re never disappointed. Maybe
